↠ THE CHARACTER
Name | Alias: Chuuya Nakahara
Journal:
vacuum
Age: 22
Canon: Bungou Stray Dogs
Canon point: At the end of the Guild arc.
History: Here.
Personality:
If there's anyone in the Port Mafia who fits the bill of your stereotypical mafioso, it's Nakahara Chuuya. From the completeness of his 3-piece suit, to the knives he keeps hidden, to the fedora hat on his head, he's everything a mafia member is supposed to look like and he even acts the part!
Brazen and smug, the everyday Chuuya often wears a crooked smile on his face, goading his enemies into fights with various threats and taunting. The language of violence comes almost naturally to him; he's not above proclaiming the ways he intends to kill a person, and he's also not above following through with his threats. Having been born with a power as versatile and destructive as Gravity Manipulation, there's a definite overconfidence that he has in his abilities, and it shows in the way he postures and belittles his enemies. He's not only been seen bragging about his accomplishments, but he's even been seen showing off, sometimes choosing to stand on the ceiling (his hat still on his head) just to give his battles a bit of a flair. If that isn't obnoxious enough, Chuuya has also quite a loud and boisterous personality. He possesses a short fuse, and when angered, he's not above shouting or resorting to actual, physical violence (both of the comical sort and the ...lethal sort). With so much noise coming out of such a small body, one might think he's compensating for something...
Chuuya's really a tiny mafioso through and through; he lives it, breathes it and certainly seems to love it. There's a deep-seated loyalty that he has to the Port Mafia. In contrast to his loud personality, Chuuya takes the tasks given to him seriously, always seeing his orders through despite the personal grievances he may have with them. He also seems to care about his place in the mafia, that high-ranking position he had earned for himself. When faced with the possibility that he would be ousted from the mafia for following his impulses and killing Dazai Osamu, Chuuya was apprehensive enough to back down. It was quite a difficult decision for him, because his grudge with Dazai ran deep. Being in the mafia isn't just a game to him. Chuuya appears to see it as a responsibility. The territory that they hold is something he would defend with his life, and he seems to care about each and every one of his subordinates. There's almost a blind loyalty that he has to the organisation. Several other characters in the series have had storylines about leaving the mafia, their experiences so awful that their decisions come completely justified. It's no secret that it isn't a good place to find yourself stuck in. Yet, Chuuya still appears to hold this unfaltering loyalty to it. It's likely that, given how young he was when he was initiated, it's the only home he's ever known, and the people he knows in there really are like his family.
There's one other thing the mafia offers to him too: the freedom to go completely wild. Chuuya is a person who lives for the thrill of a good fight, his lopsided smirk twisting into something more manic when he stumbles upon an interesting opponent. The battlefield is where he's at his happiest, and he really seems to relish in the high of tearing through it and crushing his opponent beneath the sole of his foot. Not only does he love to fight, but Chuuya can be quite ruthless when he does so. Mercy is something he's never been seen showing. When he kicks, he kicks with a force hard enough to break bone (and stamp a crater into the wall), and when he pulls out that knife of his he never does it just for show. It is said that as teenagers, Chuuya and Dazai once wiped out an entire enemy organisation by themselves, earning their collective nickname 'Double Black'. That was only one incident too - who knows how many people Chuuya has disposed of in his life? Not even women or children seem to invoke sympathy from him; he had no problems with endearing the lives of the Detective Agency's non-combatant clerks, and he seemed to do nothing when Dazai threatened to kill Q, a 13-year old boy. Growing up into the mafia-life, it's likely that he's so desensitized to the bloodshed around him that he doesn't even bat an eye to it. It's all a job, after all, and violence is the currency of the mafia.
Out of all the people Chuuya's interacted with so far, there's one particular person who gets the biggest reaction out of him of all - that would be Dazai Osamu. Dazai's presence seems to bring out the worst in Chuuya; his fuse becomes so short that the slightest insult - something he might have brushed off if coming from someone else - is enough to send him ranting and raving, and whenever they're together they stop being mafia and detective and regress into nothing more than a pair of bickering children. There are too many things about Dazai that grind his gears - he dislikes the way he slacks off, he dislikes the pranks Dazai plays on him, he dislikes the constant mockery he has to endure with Dazai around, he dislikes the way the other guy lords over him ... the list goes on and on, and if one were to note down all the terrible things Dazai has done to Chuuya over the years, they would probably find his great disdain justified. (Dazai once rigged his car with a bomb, for example.)
All the joking aside, Chuuya's feelings toward Dazai are something quite complicated. He claims to want to kill him, and with how hardly he had thrashed him in Chapter 10 some part of it seemed true (or at least he believes it's true), yet always appears distressed when Dazai gets seriously hurt. Chuuya also seems to have an odd fixation on Dazai; he seeks him out with the sole purpose of hassling him, and is always complaining about him whenever he's drunk. There's definitely some bitterness that he's keeping within. He's bitter over all the times Dazai has mocked, tormented and manipulated him for his own amusement, and he's bitter over the fact that his partner had left. The latter is something Chuuya doesn't seem to realise himself; his larger-than-life ego simply doesn't allow him to acknowledge that he might feel anything other than utter hatred for his old 'friend'. His attachment to Dazai is more than apparent, however. On the night that Dazai had disappeared, Chuuya marked the occasion by popping open a bottle of one of his most expensive wines. Though he claims to have been celebrating, there's a somberness to him when he recalls that night; it's certainly not the expression one carries when remembering a 'celebration'.
Chuuya and Dazai have quite a tumultuous relationship, but they seem to work together in flawless synergy when it comes to battle, even after being apart for so long. Dazai provides the brains, Chuuya provides the braun; one always seems to fit in with the other, complementing them without the use of words. It's a feat made only possible because they know each other so well, right down to their next moves and breathing patterns. While Chuuya understands the way Dazai fights, and may know him a little better than most of the people around him, he doesn't seem to understand Dazai on an emotional-level though. The other man is simply too cagey, too secretive about his true feelings and too deceitful. It doesn't help that Chuuya isn't quite the type to read between the lines. Years later, he still has no idea why Dazai had left, and as such, he continues to resent him for it.
Though he may be a criminal, Chuuya at his core isn't that bad of a person. More of a brute than anything. He's the honest and straightforward sort, his intentions and feelings out there and clear for all to see. He's also the gullible and trusting sort, which makes him quite susceptible to manipulation. Though he repeatedly claimed to hate Dazai, he was still willing to trust the other man with his life and activate Tainted, the ultimate form of his power that could possibly kill him. Chuuya also cares deeply for the people around him. Out of all the superiors in the mafia, he was the one most upset at the sight of his cursed subordinates in those body bags. He mourned their deaths, and was spiteful toward Q, whose power had put them there. He even displays concern for Dazai, an ex-colleague who had betrayed them.
Abilities and Nerfs:
'For The Tainted Sorrow' is the name of Chuuya's ability. When he activates it, he has the power to manipulate gravity. With a touch of the hand, Chuuya can change the gravitational pull the earth has on an object, making that object light as a feather or crushing it into the ground under its own weight. He can also use this power to alter his own gravity, giving him the ability to jump high distances, fly (somewhat), walk on ceilings and increase his 'heaviness' to the point where his kicks form craters.
'Corruption' is the ultimate form of his ability. In his 'Corrupted' state, Chuuya gains the power to manipulate the gravity around him, making things float or crack under pressure (to a lesser extent, he's also able to do this when extremely angered). Chuuya also becomes powerful enough to create mini-black holes that suck up and decimate everything in their path. According to Dazai, his punches become so heavy that he can break a tank with them. The downside of using 'Corruption' is that it seems to destroy his body, making him bleed under his skin and out of his eyes/nose/mouth. When 'Corruption' is activated, Chuuya loses all sanity, raging on until his body breaks down and he dies. In canon, only Dazai's ability can deactivate corruption. He's unable to put a stop to it on his own.
His powers in general will be nerfed to the extent where he'll only able to use them on objects no bigger than a car. In his berserk state, he'll still lose control of himself, but not only will that nerf apply, but he'll also lose the ability to create black holes.
