THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Nami
Series: One Piece
Canon Point: Before wrecking Sanji's wedding.
Character Age: 20
Background: Here.

Personality: If one were to try and describe a woman like Nami, too many words would come to mind. Much like the thief and pirate that she is, she's greedy, often chasing after money, treasure and anything that looks like it might fetch a price. She's bossy, taking on a queen-like role in her crew and ordering even her very own captain around. She's violent, a woman quick to anger and quicker to deliver one of her famous smackdowns (her fists, so apparently strong when used to scold her friends that even a 500 million beli man is brought to his knees). There are many people in her life who have called her an 'evil woman', and perhaps, with her self-serving nature, she can be. However, underneath all those less-than-flattering traits lies a kind, lively woman with big dreams and a bigger heart. In the Strawhat crew, Nami fashions herself as the voice of reason, keeping in line the more reckless personalities so that the crew can live to sail another day. She also makes sailing possible at all, being the one who charts out their routes.

Though she's an upbeat personality who's living out the time of her life now, Nami didn't always have it this good. Before joining up with the Strawhat pirates, she used to live a life of treachery and deceit. Jumping from pirate crew to pirate crew, she used to rub shoulders with the most deplorable men of the seas, charming them into letting down their guards and stealing from them. She hated pirates then, but that didn't mean that that kind of dangerous, lonely life was one she actually wanted to lead. She simply had no choice -- she had to collect enough money to free her town from the cruel reign of Arlong. The Nami then, while just as cunning and self-serving, lacked that sparkle in her eye that she has now. She was often guarded about her true feelings, distancing herself from the people around her. There was no reason to get close to people, after all. There was always that chance that she might have to betray them to accomplish her goals in the end. She would put up a strong front, never allowing herself to cry or ask for help -- not when she had to board ships with dangerous men alone, or when she was locked in a room and forced to draw maps. It's such a contrast to the Nami we know now, who is often the quickest to cry and scream and beg to be saved when a scary threat approaches. Now, Nami's learned how to open up her heart to people, fostering a deep bond with the rest of the Strawhat crew. She's much more cheerful, and from her one can feel a sense of peace that can only come from finally being free.

Despite her age, Nami is almost like the big sister of the crew, constantly scolding her (often older) crewmates when they're being silly in a dire situation. Being one of the few Strawhats who can be considered a 'normal' person, she has the most 'normal' outlook on things. She thinks in a logical manner, always considering the most realistic approach to take in order to obtain her goal. She's a bit of a survivalist in that aspect, choosing to avoid conflicts and fights if she can help it (much to her chagrin, the same can't quite be said for Luffy and Zoro, who often get into fights just for the fun of it). Even if it means lying about her motivations to curry favor with the enemy or pretending to sell out a friend, Nami will say anything to go on living another day. Of course, she would never sell out a friend for real - it's usually just a pretense as she thinks up a way to save them both later. Her drive to survive, coupled with the knowledge that she's physically weaker than a lot of monstrous people in the Grand Line, can make her somewhat a coward at times.

While she usually tries to stay the sensible one, Luffy's whimsical and carefree nature seems to have rubbed off on her over time. She seems to take a relaxed approach to life in general, often seen sunbathing on deck in their downtime. She also goofs off on occasion, once pretending to be a ninja while she was trying to summon thunder from her climatact. Even when she knows they're going to be risking their lives in the near future, Nami is still able to enjoy a meal with her crewmates and go about her routine. She's long been swept into the Strawhat 'pace', becoming the sort of person to take life as it comes even if she's often afraid. Though she usually cries and complains about a dangerous decision that Luffy has made, she always seems to go along with it in the end. It's because she knows that whatever ends up happening, she'll have dependable friends to keep her safe.

Knowing that the New World is an unforgiving place, Nami has set out to be the best navigator that she can be; not only to fulfil her dream of drawing a map of the world, but also to make sure they actually get to where they want to go. There's no grimmer fate than being lost in the vastness of sea, and that's something that Nami has vowed to prevent. To keep her knowledge sharp, she's often seen reading books and picking up whatever new information she can. If there's something to learn about a new compass or a new route to take, she's the first one to ask about it (and those other muscleheads in her crew probably won't even care). Over time, she's grown to become one of the best navigators we've seen in the series so far, but that's not the extent of her capabilities. Somewhere in her youth, Nami's developed a sensitivity to changes in climate and temperature. Even from the very first chapters, she's seen accurately predicting when a storm would arrive and taking appropriate action. She supplements this ability by studying climate and weather, making the science of weather her special little niche. After spending two years training in Weatheria, she's managed to weaponize this science, using it to protect her weak self whenever she's in a pinch.

Almost every character in One Piece has a silly little quirk that defines them, and Nami is no different. She would be what you would call a 'material girl', loving jewels and money and fine, fine clothing. Her greed often drives her to boss the heavy-hitters in her crew into certain tasks for the sake of collecting on the reward. She'll also smack them around a bit if they've given away the treasure she loves so much. It's come to a point where most of them are afraid to touch any of her loot; even the captain has to ask first before taking something. Nami also has this running gag where she shrewdly charges her crewmates an obscene sum for the help she gives them, sometimes charging an equally obscene interest. She's never actually been seen collecting those debts, so it's likely a little joke she likes to play.

It's true that she loves treasure, but Nami will never put her love for treasure above her love for her friends. Bigger than her love for money, bigger than her dream, she treasures her friends above all. She's a kind person at her core, usually striving to do the morally right thing even if she's technically a criminal. She's the type of person who can't quite watch another suffer without wanting to help somehow. She's also the type of person who constantly worries about the well-being of her friends, sometimes driven to tears when she sees bad things happen to them. For a friend, she will put her life on the line and fight; that says a lot, for someone who's often afraid herself. Learning from her mother, who adopted her as a baby and showed her nothing but kindness, Nami has a soft spot for children. Toward children, she's far gentler, never scolding them or showing that violent side she often shows unruly men. She can't quite watch a child crying without feeling compelled to help them, even if it means jeopardizing her entire mission.

Like everyone else in the crew, Nami is devoted to Luffy. He is the one who saved her from a life of what was essentially slavery, the one who freed her village. There are many things she will say to save her hide, many things she's willing to do, but disobeying a direct order from her captain does not seem to be one of them. After seeing him accomplish what seemed like the impossible over and over and over, she's developed a strong faith in her captain, believing without a doubt that he will one day be Pirate King, and that he is the one who will help her achieve her own dream. She's also developed a sense of duty - though it was never actually imposed on her - as navigator of the crew. That is why she strives day in and out to get better and better, learning what she can about how their strange world works. In her words, she wants to be the one to depend on to 'take you anywhere you want to go'.

Powers/Abilities:

WEATHER MANIPULATION. Nami's abilities are centered around the use of her climatact, an orange-coloured rod that she stores in ... uh, her cleavage. It's small and handheld, but if squeezed with the right force, it can extend a considerable distance, making it somewhat useful in combat (she's still weak though). Its main uses lie in its ability to manipulate the weather a little. Nami calls it chemistry, but what she can do looks much more like magic. With this rod, she can summon thunderclouds, rain clouds, lightning and strong gusts of wind. She can also render herself invisible for a short period of time by manipulating light refraction. On top of her use of the climatact, she's read up a lot about the science of weather and seems to have a sensitivity to minute changes in climate. She's able to predict, with high accuracy, if a storm is approaching, for example.

NAVIGATION. Nami is a skilled navigator, so she's knowledgeable about the use of compasses and maps. She's also pretty well-versed in shiphandling, having traveled the seas alone for a period of time.

COMBAT. Nami knows how to fight with a bo staff and she seems to be very quick on her feet (from running so much). She's also got some capability with jumping. In overall, she seems to be as fit as an athletic human, but she's otherwise nowhere near as strong as those other monsters in her world. Shonen manga, man.

Power Nerfs (if applicable): She's not a strong character, so I don't think she really needs a nerf. Let me know if one is necessary.

Inventory: Her clothes and accessories, Lola's vivre card, her climatact.

Incentives:
- The safety of her sleeping loved ones. In particular, her crew, her family back home and the friends she's made along the way.
- Books and other sources of information about the climate in El Nysa.
- El Nysan maps
- GOLD, PRECIOUS GEMS AND C A S H MONEY.
