The first thing any normal, sane person in the Ikebukuro district of Tokyo will tell you when you mention Shizuo's name is "If you see that guy, run. Don't look him in the eye, don't talk to him, don't talk loudly around him --just run." And they're right, Heiwajima Shizuo is bad news. Dubbed, quite appropriately, the strongest man in Ikebukuro, Shizuo has strength like you won't even imagine. He can catapult vending machines miles away, literally punch a guy right out of his clothes and to the other end of the street, and rip signboards out of their cement foundation like one would pluck a flower. The weirdest thing? He is 100%, no-mistake-about-it, human. His biological composition is just like that of everyone else in the series, but there is one very important factor that makes that huge difference in power.

You know how you always hear those stories in the news about people performing great feats when met with drastic conditions? Turns out the human body is much more amazing than we give it credit for, huh? This is explained in the series as the 'natural strength' of a human being, which the brain restricts to prevent people from doing crazy-ass things that might potentially destroy their body. It is only during dangerous situations that this strength is unlocked because it's needed. Shizuo was born with a weird condition, though. It appears that his brain doesn't restrict this natural strength at all, and he can use it whenever he damn well pleases; with a no-strain, no-pain guarantee.

This, coupled with his very apparent anger management issues, make for a pretty deadly combination. The first incident was in elementary school, where he snapped and tried to throw a fridge at his brother over a trivial pudding dispute. Don't get me wrong here; Shizuo loves Kasuka. The two of them share a very sweet brotherly bond, and were inseparable during their younger years. Why, however, would he try to kill him then? And why over something as small as pudding? Surely, most people might bristle a bit first, then shrug it off, right? That's most people. Shizuo has a huge problem. Whenever he gets angry --even the slightest bit annoyed-- he loses all control of his body and goes into a murderous rampage. And who bears the brunt of all this uncontrolled rage? Why, those two kids who made fun of him in class, of course. Or perhaps that kid who stole bread from him in the canteen? Quite frankly, anyone stupid enough to irritate him --whether intentionally or not-- would end up with some part of the town flying straight at them.

Now, there's a reason why the brain restricts this monstrous strength, and Shizuo soon learns this reason. With each sign post he rips out, each motorcycle he overturns, and each person he sends flying; more and more of his bones and muscles, unable to withstand the weight yet being forced to overexert themselves by a guy who somehow feels little to no strain, fracture and get torn apart. His trips to the hospital become more and more frequent, until he is virtually always seen with a cast or bandage wrapped around some part of his body. It's a lose-lose situation all around. His victims get bashed up, he himself breaks a bone or two, and the town suffers hundreds of thousands of yen in property damage. He's not stupid; of course he realises all this, of course he wants to be able to stop. But he can't; and if he knows he can't, why the heck should he bother trying anymore?

So, that's exactly what he did; or well, didn't do. It's the reason behind his invulnerability. As the bones kept breaking, and the muscles kept tearing, they subsequently recovered to be much more stronger and durable. If you take this, and you lather, rinse, repeat over the span of his entire childhood; you get a man with flesh like alligator skin(the only thing able to fully penetrate them being Nebula-brand ball point pens, for some reason), who can stand and walk around even after being shot two times. I wish I were kidding about that, but I'm not. It appears his threshold for pain is extremely high, too --if Shizuo can even feel pain at all. He can be shot and not notice until he sees the blood for himself. If you think that's enough, it looks like his recovery time is also inhumanely quick now as a result of those many injuries. After being hit by a lorry, he was up and running the next day.

Anyway, back to his childhood. He was a pretty lonely child as a result of his anger issues. It wasn't long before all the other kids began to take the hint, and kept their distance for fear of getting a bloody desk thrown at them. Granted, he was never very sociable to begin with, but now it looked like the only people who still stuck around were his brother Kasuka, and that odd classmate Shinra(who had a passionate interest in the science behind Shizuo's destructive tendency. Shizuo still pays him no heed to this day.) While walking home one day, he hears himself being called. It is a kind, gentle voice --a voice that he rarely ever hears-- and it comes from one of the shopkeepers along the street. She comments that she always sees him injured, and runs inside the store to take out two bottles of milk.

"Here you go," She says, handing both Shizuo and Kasuka a bottle, "Milk will help your bones grow stronger. You should drink it."

Anyone else would take this at face-value. It's just milk, right? It's not like she was generous enough to give him money or something else really valuable. To Shizuo, however, it means much more than that. Treated as a monster --and for good reason-- in daily life, this is one of the few incidents when a stranger actually treated him like what he was; a human, and at that time, a child. Just a child in a shitty predicament. There was no fear in her eyes as she gave him that bottle, but instead a hint of concern and then a satisfaction in her smile as he took it in his hands. Kindness was something Shizuo rarely ever received, and thus also something he treasured very deeply. He might have even developed a small crush on her as a result.

Imagine, then, how he felt when he passed by her shop one day --to find his favourite shopkeeper being bullied by a group of mobsters. Anyone would be pissed. She was such a nice lady; who the hell did those mobsters think they were?! Of course, if this was enough to ruffle the feathers of a regular person, then there was no telling what Shizuo's reaction would be. A snap of the lollipop he was holding, a stomp as it cracked into a million shards under his foot, and everything went blank. There were no more coherent thoughts in that child's head; only a messy stream of 'killDESTROYkillSLASHkillCRUSHkill'. The body moves before the conscious mind can stop it; and when Shizuo finally came back to reality, he was standing in the midst of a warzone he crafted with his own hands. There were bodies piled up around him, and he recognises one of them by her pretty apron and soft, closed eyes.

Shit, he screwed up.

Shizuo couldn't look that woman in the eye after that. Who could? What he had inflicted on her and her store was far more severe than anything a gang could ever dream of pulling. Thankfully, she survived, but the whole place was turned upside down. The glass windows were completely shattered, the tables and chairs were far from intact, and the front door was lying flat on the marble floor. Why did this happen? He had no intention of hurting her; in fact, if there was anything he wanted to do, it was save her. She did nothing to deserve this; her only fault being the fact that she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Shizuo sometimes wondered how he turned out this way. He came from a normal family, and lived a normal childhood with no trauma whatsoever. There was just nothing to account for or justify that violent streak. It was like he was violent, because he simply was. Well, if there's any lesson to be learned; it was that this is just what happens when he gets involved with people.

Fast forward a few years, and he enters Raijin Academy as a freshman. Shizuo, now a blond, has grown to be pretty tall(it must be the milk); and if he were reserved before, he's really reserved now. He meets his old friend Kishitari Shinra, who apparently still possesses that fascination with Shizuo's unique body after so many years. He meets this other guy too; a guy with a shady smile who uses his words as a weapon to both manipulate and confuse --just the kind of people Shizuo despised most. His name was Orihara Izaya --a man Shizuo hated on first sight, and fought to the death with on their first meeting for no reason but that-- and they would soon become mortal enemies.

Now, we all feel the same way when we enter a new school. It's time for a new beginning, a new experience; nobody knows who you are, this blank slate is just waiting to be filled! Shizuo wanted nothing more than a peaceful school life --free from the fighting, free from all who had a grudge against him-- so why then, did it just seem to get worse? Why were countless people picking fights or ambushing him when he could not remember ever doing anything to them?! Something changed. It wasn't like elementary school or middle school anymore; there was another factor in the miserable equation that was dead-set on making his every school day a bloody one(And the blood was not Shizuo's, mind you.) It hit him soon after. That something was Orihara Izaya.

It turns out that Izaya was pulling the strings all along. He had framed Shizuo for countless things he did not do; so generously making enemies for him out of people he had never even met. Shizuo was right about his first gut feeling --Izaya is nothing short of a huge douche. And so, upon realising this, it began. Sparks would fly whenever the two of them caught even the slightest glimpse of each other; and not so long after, a classroom door or water cooler or concrete pillar would follow suit. The quiet school life he had envisioned was moving further and further from his reach --and it was quite clearly that damn louse's fault. Shizuo began to hold a grudge for Izaya. One he would keep all the way until adulthood.

After high school ended, things finally started to subside. He could never go back to the peaceful, normal days from before his anger issues surfaced, but with Izaya running off to do some nonsense in Shinjuku at least it was quieter now. Shizuo set himself out to make a living. He hopped from job to job: First working as a cashier at a fast-food restaurant(Got pissed at a customer and flipped the counter table), then as an attendant at a gas station(Got pissed at a driver and punched a dent into the roof of his car), then even as an extra on the Power R*ngers(Got pissed at some of the actors and tried to throw them). It was quite clear after a while that none of those jobs were really working out, but he kept trying anyway. He soon found himself a job as a bartender at a local bar, and had not many problems with it initially.

At that time, Heiwajima Kasuka, Shizuo's brother, had already made it big in Japan as an actor under the alias 'Hanejima Yuuhei'. Apparently, Kasuka had saved a talent scout who had foolishly tried to employ Shizuo and almost lost his life as a result; thus being hired himself instead. One day, Shizuo gets a visit at his workplace from the brother he had not seen in quite a while. The actor definitely turned some heads because of the suspicious boxes he had along brought with him, if he didn't turn them already with his presence alone(A famous star visiting a simply bartender?). Upon tearing open the seal, Shizuo found twenty sets of bartender uniforms folded nicely instead.

"You shouldn't change jobs all the time. I bought a lot, so you can stay here a long time."

Shizuo knew that this gesture was Kasuka's way of encouraging him. He himself wanted to be able to stick with one job, and with Kasuka giving him more reason to --he felt like he would actually be able to succeed. The two brothers shared a strong, silent bond. They didn't show their love with words, but with actions instead. Every time the anger would get to Shizuo's head back then, Kasuka would immediately hand him a bottle of milk to calm him down. Though nothing was said, it was highly effective.

"Thanks, I'll do my best, I guess."

And Shizuo did try his best. He did try his fucking best until he found himself being dragged out of the bar one night by a total of seven policemen. Even for the law enforcement; Shizuo is a pretty hard person to deal with. The main question was: Why?! What the hell did he do now? What did they want with him?! As Shizuo stood pinned against the fence with several policemen struggling just to keep him still, he learned the answer. It was like high school all over again. Orihara Izaya --that damned louse-- smiled at him from behind the safety of all those policemen. Apparently, he was back in town, and thought this to be a befitting greeting. Izaya had framed Shizuo once more, but at a much larger scale now. It wasn't petty classroom disputes anymore; they were adults now, after all --surely the extent of Izaya's trickery would increase proportionately as well. Izaya had framed him for a crime this time, and well, there was just no way his boss was going to take him back after that.

He gets released soon after when they finally confirm his innocence, and walks out unemployed once more. It isn't a good feeling. What about that promise he made to his brother? He's got a closet full of bartender outfits at home, and they'll just serve to remind him that he had broken it. As he walks out of the police station, it is here that he gets his final job offer: the one he actually manages to stick to. An old friend from middle school, Tanaka Tom, approaches him and invites him to work in a debt-collection agency. Shizuo doesn't like the idea of it at first. He knows that he would be the muscle behind the operation, and the last thing he would ever want to do is actually hurt people for a living. Tom reassures him, though. Because the name 'Heiwajima Shizuo' was quite a well-known and powerful one in Ikebukuro --no surprise there, considering what Shizuo did to the city from time to time-- Tom only had the intention of using him to scare the debtors into payment. There was no actual violence involved.

And so, convinced, he accepts it. Yeah, it still means breaking his promise to his brother. He does feel guilty over it; that's why he tries to honor that promise in all his ability by wearing a bartender's uniform every day, despite the fact that he isn't a bartender anymore. It's not long before that bartender outfit becomes a trademark of his, and immediately recognised by the debtors of Ikebukuro as their cue to either run away or beg for their lives. Shizuo still has this job to this day, finally coming as close as he can to actually settling down.

Very frequently, and rarely ever because he wants to.

Shizuo is tall. It could be the milk, or maybe it's in his genes --but damn, is he tall. He easily towers over almost all the characters in the series. He has blond hair(it's dyed), is always seen in a bartender's outfit, and is stated in the novels to have a very serene face --a gentle nose, and gentle eyes hidden behind purple shades.

Heiwajima Shizuo is violence: clothed up, and encased in a deceptively lean and elegant human form. He punches, he kicks, he crushes, he throws; and for what reason? Just letting off some steam, of course. There is no planning, no premeditation; just raw, unleashed fury and a superhuman body that acts upon it. Shizuo has an impossibly short fuse and berserk buttons situated all over the damn place; when someone is lucky enough to hit one of them, they're really in for something. It all looks calm enough at first; there are no warnings with Shizuo, you see. He'll gently remove the cigarette from his mouth, then snap it in two and crush it under his foot. This is your cue to run the fuck away; it's a tic of his that only surfaces when he's angry. After that, it all goes to hell. He doesn't think anymore, --not coherently, anyway-- the only thing going through his mind is violence, and the many different ways he can inflict it. The many words and death threats bubble and gurgle with great intensity inside his mind, ready to bust right through their container anytime. If you're a nobody to him, then none of your pleas can reach him now. (And sometimes, when it really gets bad, even the somebodies have something to worry about.)

When angered, his face breaks into a smile --it is an odd one, looking endlessly sadistic yet somehow, you know that what he feels is not sadism. It may be the only smile you'll ever get from him. Despite the fact that his mind is in a literal mess, he still manages to form proper sentences. His tone at this point is cold. It is described to be like boiling liquid helium: bone-chilling at the touch yet looking seethingly hot. His words are aggressive, and his actions ...well, you'll probably find the words to describe them yourself when you're lying on that hospital bed. They call him 'Ikebukuro's Automatic Fighting Doll', and with good reason. He truly is 'Automatic', you see. Slight annoyance becomes full-out rage, becomes a-fist-headed-for-your-fucking face; and all in a manner of seconds, like someone simply flipped his switch on. Don't sweat it, however. With such a low tolerance level, he must have quite a quick cool-down too, right? Correct. Just like how the most trivial of things can rile him up, the most trivial of things can also cool him down.(Unless, of course, your name is Orihara Izaya. Then nothing short of your dead, rotting corpse will calm down this man.)

Ironically enough, Shizuo hates violence. It's completely true. Shizuo --the real, conscious Heiwajima Shizuo-- is a peaceful man. He is quiet and reserved, preferring to simply tag along and let Tanaka Tom do all the talking whenever they're on a job. The reason for this is that he simply doesn't want to get involved with people; he knows all too well, after years of living with his anger issues, what happens when he does. The more people he gets involved with, the more susceptible he is to any annoying trait they may have --be it talking too much, obnoxiousness-- and the higher the chances of him flipping a shit and throwing something heavy at them. Despite not wanting to get involved with people, however, Shizuo cannot handle being alone. He's simply human, you know? That is why he does build ties with a select few people: His brother, Celty and Tom-san, for example.

While others crave for excitement, Shizuo wants nothing more than a normal life. He wants to just get a job, earn money and live like everybody else. That is why the simple things that most take for granted are so special to him: like the thought of having a kouhai, for example. When Vorona joined the debt-collection company Shizuo was under, Shizuo treated her very well: buying her a cup of coffee and handing it to her with a truly, happy smile on his face. Can you blame him? With his constant job-hopping back then, it was the first time he ever had a kouhai. Not only was it indication that Shizuo had successfully managed to stick with the same job for a long period of time, but it was also an experience most normal people had that he didn't so far --a step toward normalcy, even. A normal life is the thing Shizuo wants more than anything else, after all. That is why he's slowly strengthening himself mentally, until the day when he is finally able to control that violent streak.

He has what Izaya calls a 'protozoic' brain. Granted, what Izaya --who isn't too fond of him-- could mean by that is 'stupid', however you cannot deny that his way of thinking truly is that one-track. He's a very simple-minded person. If it is, then it is; if it's not, then it's not. If he can walk after being shot a few times, then it's simply because he can. Explanations behind things are something of no interest to him, especially if they pertain to the mysteries of his special body. Shizuo will take things literally, and can even be gullible at times. When Namie put up a fake 'We've Moved.' sign in front of the apartment she shared with Izaya, Shizuo --who was hot on his tail-- stupidly believed it and went to look for him somewhere else. It is no surprise that with his simple way of thinking, his fighting style reflects it with its simplicity as well. There is no form nor structure to his way of fighting. You wouldn't be wrong in saying that all he does is throw things and punch people until they collapse.

Shizuo is an honest man --in every sense of the word-- and thus appreciates honesty in return. Anyone who is straightforward with him is less likely to be on the receiving end of his deadly rampage. That is why he is kinder to children or animals, who are of more innocent nature. When the young Akane, who had been tricked by Izaya into believing that Shizuo was an evil man out to murder her family, accused him of being an assassin, he didn't lift a finger on her. Shinra, who had been there as well, was already bracing himself for Shizuo's violent retaliation --but it never came. Instead, Shizuo gave her a reassuring smile, and lied through metaphorical gritted teeth(considering who it involved) that Izaya was just a good friend of his, and he only said that because they recently had a fight. With a playful wink, he left the perplexed Shinra and Akane, mentioning something about 'making up with him'. Shizuo was angry; very fucking pissed, in fact. However, he knew that the little girl's fears were genuine, so he was able to suppress that anger and put on a face that wouldn't scare her --well, suppress it until he finally finds that bastard Izaya, anyway. An appreciation for direct honesty also brings with it a distaste for people who trap their victims into an intricate labyrinth of lies and half-truths. Describes Izaya quite perfectly, doesn't it? This explains why he hated Izaya on first sight, and will continue to hate him no matter what the situation.

The first thing Shizuo did when he returned to headquarters was rummage through the stationary. Most would expect the headquarters of a debt-collection agency to have a cliched, shady atmosphere to it --with dim lights, questionable stains on the floors and old, weathered walls-- but the company Shizuo worked for operated mainly like an office, and looked like one too. He had one hand shoving through the many pencils and staplers in the supply drawer, and the other hand --well, that hand was kind of disadvantaged.

He had a pen lodged right through that hand, you see.

How did it get there? Ah, that's a pain to think about. He didn't know the details. All he knew was that he was spending the evening with a good friend of his -- Celty Struluson, Ikebukuro's famed 'Black Rider'-- when Celty suddenly took off after a girl she had spotted. Now, he didn't really know what the hell was going on, but what he did know was that this girl meant something to her, so his first thought was to chip in and help. Things escalated from there. To put it short: that girl's apparent 'soulmate' was not pleased, he stabbed Shizuo with a pen three times, and Shizuo gave him a headbutt from hell that finally knocked him out cold.

So yeah, he got to keep the pen. It was really too bad he had to keep it in his hand, though. Hey, who was he to complain? It wasn't like he actually felt pain. After so many years of injury after injury, he figured that his pain receptors got tired and somehow burned out along the way, rendering him unable to feel it altogether. (That was only a theory, by the way. It wasn't like he actually knew jack shit about human physiology.) A normal person would be sweating by the buckets in fear by now, but Shizuo simply let that hand dangle nonchalantly.

"What are you looking for, Shizuo?" Came a voice from the corridor, as a bespectacled man with noticable dreadlocks in his hair stepped in. Shizuo immediately recognised it as that of Tanaka Tom, his colleague and old time friend.

"The superglue," Shizuo stated, giving him a quick glance of acknowledgement and then turning back to the drawer, "Where is it?"

"Superglue?" This raised all kinds of alarms in Tom's head. Arts and crafts were never Shizuo's forte; in fact, they were the last thing Shizuo would ever consider taking up. Tom almost hesitated to inquire further. Having known Shizuo for so long, he also knew that the younger man was not one of much common sense; deep down, he already knew what Shizuo needed it for, and he feared that he was right, "May I ask ...what for?"

"Huh? Oh, this. It'll close the wound, right?" Shizuo held up the injured hand, metallic pen glistening in the fluorescent light as if proud to be there. There was a bored expression on his face, and he did not find anything odd with the situation at all. A trickle of blood rolled down the back of his palm. This was when his expression finally went through a subtle change; his brows furrowing, as if slightly irritated, "I thought it wouldn't bleed if I left it there."

To Shizuo's confusion, Tom's face fell. The older man went through a series of emotions: first utterly, wordlessly shocked, then defeated --as if Shizuo had somehow proven him wrong in the worst possible fashion. And it was true. Tom knew about Shizuo's tendency to lean toward the most unconventional of first aid (The guy wouldn't die, anyway. He tried not to worry about it too much.) but superglue to treat a stab wound was completely unheard of. Especially since that stab wound apparently went right through a part of his body.

"Shizuo! Shouldn't you call an ambulance for that?!"

Shizuo scratched the back of his neck, and replied with that same bored expression again, "Nah, they'll ask a lot of questions. Besides, I don't wanna stay there or anything." He didn't know what Tom was getting so worked up about. In fact, Tom was getting much more worked up about it than he himself was --which made no sense at all.

Tanaka Tom sighed, wondering why he even expected Shizuo to listen, "At least go see a doctor, then ...? Even if the wound itself has no effect, you might still get lead poisoning, you know."

Shizuo thought about it, and it was a good idea. Poison was different from the physical wounds he usually received; his body didn't have a conditioned immunity to them, and he could actually die. He knew a doctor who could give him good prices without a single question asked, anyway. This guy, Kishitari Shinra, was a shady and sometimes annoying character, but he happened to share an apartment with Celty, so that was a definite plus. Shizuo wanted to check up on how she was doing after that incident.

"Fine, fine. I'll go. "
